Book files and reading data

Files you open are processed locally in your browser. We do not upload, receive or store the contents of your books on our servers. Because the reading happens on your device, we cannot see which books you open or what they contain.

Essential browser storage

Reader features use storage built into your browser. Depending on the features you use, IndexedDB may hold saved book files, book metadata, reading positions, bookmarks, highlights and notes. localStorage may hold theme, typography and other interface preferences. This storage is necessary to provide the features you request and stays on the device and browser profile where it was created.

You can remove locally saved data from the reader's library controls or by clearing site data for onlineepubreader.com in your browser. Clearing browser data may permanently remove saved books, progress and notes from that device.

Cookies and analytics

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is enabled on the production site to help us understand page visits, feature usage and technical reliability. The GA4 loader is requested when the page opens so Google Consent Mode can be initialized, but analytics storage starts in a denied state. We do not enable measurement or set GA4 cookies unless you choose “Allow analytics” in the consent notice. The measurement ID is used only to route aggregate website events to our GA4 property.

Data GA4 may collect

GA4 may receive information about pages viewed, feature interactions, referring pages, approximate location, device type, operating system, browser and general timing or performance. Google states that IP addresses may be used when data is collected but are not logged or stored by Google Analytics.

GA4 normally uses first-party cookies named _ga and _ga_<container-id> to distinguish users and preserve session state. Google lists a default expiration of up to two years, although browser rules, consent choices and our configuration may shorten that period.

What analytics will not receive

We will not intentionally send book files, book contents, file names, book titles or metadata, reading positions, bookmarks, highlights, notes, within-book search queries or contact-message contents to Google Analytics. Opening and reading a book will continue to happen locally in your browser.

How we will use analytics

Our GA4 configuration is for aggregate audience measurement, feature improvement and technical reliability. We will not use GA4 data to identify the books you read, build a profile of your reading activity or enable advertising personalization. We will retain GA4 user-level and event-level data for no longer than 14 months; aggregate reports may remain available for longer.

Google's role and international processing

Google will process GA4 data on our behalf under its applicable data-processing terms. Analytics data may be processed in countries where Google or its service providers operate. You can learn more in Google's Google Analytics data safeguards and Privacy Policy.

Your analytics choices

You can accept or reject analytics in the consent notice. Rejecting analytics will not prevent you from opening or reading books. After making a choice, use “Analytics settings” in the footer to reopen the notice, or clear or block cookies in your browser. You can also use the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

The essential local storage described above is separate from GA4 and is used only to provide reader features you choose.

Offline use

A service worker may place the application shell—such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript and icons—in Cache Storage so the reader can open offline. This cache is functional browser storage. Book files are kept in the reader's local book storage rather than added to the application cache.

Website delivery and technical data

Like any website, our hosting and security infrastructure may process basic request information such as an IP address, browser details, requested URL and request time to deliver the site, maintain reliability and prevent abuse. This technical processing does not include the contents of books you open locally.

Contact messages

Our contact page creates a draft in your email application; it does not submit the form contents to our website. If you choose to send the email, we receive the address and information you include and use it to respond to your request. Please do not send book files or sensitive personal information.

External links in books

Links inside a book may lead to third-party websites. Opening one is your choice, and the destination has its own privacy practices.

Changes to this policy

We may revise this policy as the reader changes. The date at the top of this page will show when the latest version took effect.
